H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING NICHOLAS ALAHVERDIAN AND NEXUSGOVERNMENT ON

FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN IN DCYF CARE AND FOR NICHOLAS

ALAHVERDIAN'S SERVICE TO THIS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

     WHEREAS, It is fitting that this House of Representatives recognizes those citizens who,

through their determination and unwavering commitment to the prevention of child abuse and

1-3

negligence, have distinguished themselves in academia, state government, and in their

1-4

communities; and

1-5

     WHEREAS, Nicholas Alahverdian is one such exceptional citizen. He has relentlessly

1-6

fought for the rights and privileges of children and adolescents in state care; and

1-7

     WHEREAS, As someone who was previously in DCYF care, Nicholas Alahverdian has

1-8

broken many barriers. He is authoring a book on the poet Sylvia Plath, he is the current policy

1-9

director of NexusGovernment, and he is a student at Harvard University; and

1-10

     WHEREAS, His domestic non-profit corporation, NexusGovernment, duly established

1-11

with the Office of the Secretary of State, is a constant presence in the State House and across

1-12

Rhode Island, advocating for the protection of rights of all Rhode Islanders; and

1-13

     WHEREAS, He was hired first by Senator Beatrice A. Lanzi and subsequently Speaker

1-14

Gordon D. Fox, and served this honorable House of Representatives as a Page and a Legislative

1-15

Aide from 2002 through 2003, and was a dependable and ubiquitous young servant to the duly

1-16

elected Representatives of this House; and

1-17

     WHEREAS, He has been employed or otherwise associated with the Swearer Center for

1-18

Public Service at Brown University, the Providence Urban Debate League, the YMCA of Greater

1-19

Providence, the Rhode Island Disability Law Center, and NBC News; and

     WHEREAS, Nicholas Alahverdian has distinguished himself as someone who is ready

2-2

and willing to conquer any possible obstacle that obstructs the path to ensuring that all rights of

2-3

children and adolescents in state care are protected; and

2-4

     WHEREAS, Nicholas Alahverdian first carved out his place in history by having the

2-5

unique political beginner’s lesson of being heckled by over 900 people, when, as a mere high

2-6

school student in 2002, he testified in support of the Mayor of Cranston at a City Council hearing;

2-7

and

2-8

     WHEREAS, Nicholas Alahverdian deserved and wanted nothing more than a high school

2-9

education, pursuant to state law, but as a youth in night-to-night care under DCYF, was

2-10

prohibited from receiving the same; and

2-11

     WHEREAS, An outspoken advocate for abandoned, abused, and neglected children,

2-12

Nicholas Alahverdian has done and will do his utmost to help provide for fair living standards

2-13

and the protection of rights for youth in the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and

2-14

the United States of America; now, therefore be it

2-15

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

2-16

Providence Plantations honors Nicholas Alahverdian’s tireless devotion to the protection of

2-17

children and adolescents in the care of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, and

2-18

the prevention of abuse and negligence upon the same; and be it further

2-19

     RESOLVED, That we affirm that we appreciate his service to this House of

2-20

Representatives, Speaker Fox, the leadership of the State of Rhode Island and Providence

2-21

Plantations, and the people of this state. We extend our sincere wishes for his continued

2-22

happiness and success; and be it further

2-23

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-24

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Nicholas Alahverdian.
