EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF LOLA E. SANTINE DEL SESTO

WHEREAS, It is with deep regret and sadness that we have learned of the passing of former Rhode Island First Lady Lola Elda Santine (Faraone) Del Sesto; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Del Sesto was the wife of the late Christopher Del Sesto, who served as Rhode Island's governor from 1958 to 1960. He then served as Superior Court Judge; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Del Sesto, raised in the Silver Lake section of Providence, graduated from Commercial High School and attended classes at George Washington University during the time her husband worked in Washington, DC at the Department of Justice; and

WHEREAS, An avid reader, whose interests included music, history, fashion and above all, family, Mrs. Del Sesto served tirelessly as Rhode Island's First Lady. She enjoyed being the state's official hostess, and was often described as a fashion plate. She delighted in designing clothes and wearing fancy hats from a collection of about four dozen; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Del Sesto served as a board member of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra, and the Chopin Club. She served as president of the literary group Cirolo Petrarca, president of the Dantesca Society and chaired the Italian Heritage Festival and Florentine Relief Fund. She was named honorary trustee of Johnson and Wales University; and

WHEREAS, This year, in Silver Lake, a new middle school was named the Governor Christopher and Lola Del Sesto Middle School; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby expresses our deepest sympathies to the Del Sesto family on the passing of Lola E. Santine Del Sesto and that the former First Lady will forever be remembered by this entire membership for her numerous contributions to the State of Rhode Island; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Del Sesto family.
