EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF RUTH LONG | |

     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this House has learned of the passing of Ruth |

Long, the devoted wife of the late Lester Long, to whom she had been married for forty-two |
1-3 |
wonderful years. She was the mother of three children, our former colleague, The Honorable |
1-4 |
Bruce Long, and his wife Jane, Neil Long, and his wife, Laura, and Janice Long. She was also the |
1-5 |
beloved grandmother of eight grandchildren, Jessica, Jamie, Christina, Timothy, Jonathan, Scott, |
1-6 |
Matthew, and Brett, and one great-grandchild, Michael; and |
1-7 |
     WHEREAS, Mrs. Long, fondly known as “Ruthee” by her family and many friends, was |
1-8 |
born in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Gustave and Fannie Solomon, who had emigrated from |
1-9 |
Eastern Europe ten years earlier. She met and married her husband, Lester, who was a United |
1-10 |
States Navy sailor at the time, and in 1956, the couple moved to Rhode Island to raise their |
1-11 |
family; and |
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, While her children were still in school, Mrs. Long devoted her enthusiasm |
1-13 |
and energies to creating a home that was warm and welcoming for her husband and children. She |
1-14 |
later worked as a babysitter and was a Fuller Brush salesperson, but found her niche at the |
1-15 |
Newport Grand, where she faithfully and cheerfully served her customers for thirty years; and |
1-16 |
     WHEREAS, In addition, Mrs. Long was a member of the Middletown Republican Town |
1-17 |
Committee, and volunteered at the Middletown elementary schools, local nursing homes, and the |
1-18 |
Veteran’s Home in Bristol; and |
1-19 |
     WHEREAS, Ruthee Long was the heart and soul of her family. Her great sense of humor |
1-20 |
and kindheartedness will forever be indelibly imprinted on the lives and in the cherished |
1-21 |
memories of her entire family. She enriched the lives of all who had the good fortune to have |
2-1 |
known her and she will be dearly missed; now, therefore be it |
2-2 |
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
2-3 |
Providence Plantations hereby expresses our deepest sympathies to the entire Long Family on the |
2-4 |
passing of Ruthee Long; and be it further |
2-5 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-6 |
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to The Honorable Bruce Long, Neil Long, and |
2-7 |
Janice Long. |
