It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
|

SECTION 1. Section 31-22.1-2 of the General Laws in Chapter 31-22.1 entitled "Pupil |
|

Transportation Vehicles" is hereby amended to read as follows: |
|

31-22.1-2. Pupil transportation vehicle -- Vehicle standards. – (a) Vans, sport utility |
|
1-4 |
vehicles, and heavy automobiles as defined by applicable federal regulations may be used as |
|
1-5 |
pupil transportation vehicles provided that these vehicles meet the highest federal |
|
1-6 |
crashworthiness standards for these categories of vehicles. Unless otherwise specifically provided |
|
1-7 |
for herein, the provisions of section 31-20-4, et seq. (Special Stops Required) shall be applicable |
|
1-8 |
to pupil transportation vehicles. The provisions of section 31-23-42 (First aid kit and heating |
|
1-9 |
equipment), section 31-23-42.2 (Power equipment on school buses), section 31-23-54 (Fire |
|
1-10 |
extinguishers), and section 31-23-55 (Speedometer and odometer) shall be applicable to pupil |
|
1-11 |
transportation vehicles. A pupil transportation vehicle shall not be required to be painted school |
|
1-12 |
bus yellow provided it carries a sign in school bus yellow visible from forward and from in back |
|
1-13 |
of the vehicle containing the lettering required by section 31-20-11. |
|
1-14 |
(b) Notwithstanding any other law or regulation, the school committee of any city, town |
|
1-15 |
or regional school district is hereby authorized to sell advertising space on the exterior of school |
|
1-16 |
buses, provided that no such advertising shall obstruct the vision of motorists or be inconsistent |
|
1-17 |
with the safety regulations pertaining to school buses in Rhode Island general laws chapter 31-23. |
|
1-18 |
Said school committees are hereby authorized to negotiate with private school bus carriers |
|
1-19 |
regarding the content of said advertising, and the sharing of revenues derived therefrom. |
|
2-1 |
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |
