RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING ALEXIS JOSEPH COURNOYER UPON | |
ACHIEVING SCOUTING'S MOST DISTINGUISHED HONOR, THE RANK OF EAGLE | |

     WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America has a long and impressive history of preparing |
1-2 |
young men to assume responsibility in their communities. The term "Boy Scout" is used to |
1-3 |
describe someone who is earnest and honest, or who helps others cheerfully; and |
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, Boy Scouts of America is one of the largest youth organizations in the |
1-5 |
United States. The rank of Eagle Scout, which was first introduced in 1911, is the highest a |
1-6 |
young man can attain in the Boy Scouts, and the title of Eagle Scout is held for life; and |
1-7 |
     WHEREAS, Alexis Cournoyer is a remarkable young man worthy of this prestigious |
1-8 |
achievement and his accomplishments are truly deserving of our recognition; and |
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, Alexis has distinguished himself through his continued performance of |
1-10 |
active service in Scouting. He has demonstrated strong leadership abilities by serving in several |
1-11 |
positions. He is also a member of the brotherhood of the BSA Honor Society, Order of the |
1-12 |
Arrow, and a BSA certified lifeguard. He has exhibited a strong sense of duty, honor, and |
1-13 |
patriotism, making him a clear example of the best qualities of American youth; and |
1-14 |
     WHEREAS, Alexis Joseph Cournoyer of Troop 1, Portsmouth, Rhode Island, has |
1-15 |
completed the arduous and demanding requirements necessary to be awarded the rank of Eagle |
1-16 |
Scout. As the highlight of his scouting years and to complete the final step toward obtaining the |
1-17 |
rank of Eagle, Alexis planned, developed, and carried out an extensive Eagle Scout service |
1-18 |
project. His Eagle Project was to build a patio and planting area at the Bristol Ferry Town |
1-19 |
Common, as well as a base for the informational sign that describes the historic significance of |
1-20 |
the area. The project consisted of raising all the funds and materials from local businesses, and |
2-1 |
organizing all of the workers, scouts, and volunteers. Alexis and fellow scouts devoted countless |
2-2 |
hours and an amazing amount of energy carrying out his project for the benefit of the community; |
2-3 |
and |
2-4 |
     WHEREAS, Currently, a junior at Bishop Stang High School, a volunteer at most school |
2-5 |
events as well as a member of the football team, Alexis also finds the time and energy to be an |
2-6 |
exemplary student. He actively participates in the work of his church, Our Lady of Mount |
2-7 |
Carmel, where he serves as a Master of Ceremonies at Mass, as well as a Sacristan for the parish. |
2-8 |
Alexis is employed by the local YMCA as a lifeguard and summer camp counselor for kayaking |
2-9 |
and surfing; and |
2-10 |
     WHEREAS, Alexis has been recognized for his devotion to his community. He was |
2-11 |
commended for his support of children with special needs by the Newport County Regional |
2-12 |
Special Education Advisory Board. He will build on this experience by participating on a week- |
2-13 |
long missionary trip in August 2012 with fifteen of his peers who were selected to volunteer at an |
2-14 |
orphanage for severely handicapped children located in Nicaragua; and |
2-15 |
     WHEREAS, It is essential and fitting to recognize the triumphs of our youth and to |
2-16 |
celebrate the accomplishments of our future leaders. Eagle Scout Alexis Joseph Cournoyer |

exemplifies everything an Eagle Scout should be and all that we hope our children will grow to |
2-18 |
be; now, therefore be it |

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
2-20 |
Providence Plantations hereby extends our deepest appreciation to Alexis for his untiring service |
2-21 |
to the community and for setting a high standard of commitment and dedication by which the |
2-22 |
youth of this great state may follow. We send our very best wishes to Alexis Joseph Cournoyer |
2-23 |
and wish him good health and happiness in the months and years ahead; and be it further |
2-24 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the State be and he hereby is authorized and directed |
2-25 |
to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to Alexis Joseph Cournoyer. |
