It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |

     SECTION 1. Chapter 16-22 of the General Laws entitled "Curriculum" is hereby |

amended by adding thereto the following section: |

     16-22-26. Diplomas for students in alternative programs. -- Any student or pupil in a |
1-4 |
Rhode Island public school who successfully completes the graduation requirements of an |
1-5 |
alternative learning program approved by a school district and/or local education agency (LEA) |
1-6 |
shall be awarded a diploma upon graduation. Certificates of attendance, academic and technical |
1-7 |
skill achievement, work readiness, and other forms may be awarded to a student by a school |
1-8 |
district and/or an LEA, but such certificates shall be in addition to and shall not be used as a |
1-9 |
substitute for or in lieu of a diploma. |
1-10 |
     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |

     This act would provide that students who complete the graduation requirements of an |

alternative learning program approved by a school district would be awarded a diploma upon |

graduation. Certificates of achievement and other types would still be awarded, but such |
2-4 |
certificates would be in addition to and not a substitute for a diploma. |

     This act would take effect upon passage. |
