A N A C T

RELATING TO EDUCATION - CURRICULUM

     

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Morrison, Naughton, Mattiello, O`Neill, and Gallison

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 16-22 of the General Laws entitled "Curriculum" is hereby

amended by adding thereto the following section:

     16-22-26. Diplomas for students in alternative programs. -- Any student or pupil in a

1-4

Rhode Island public school who successfully completes the graduation requirements of an

1-5

alternative learning program approved by a school district and/or local education agency (LEA)

1-6

shall be awarded a diploma upon graduation. Certificates of attendance, academic and technical

1-7

skill achievement, work readiness, and other forms may be awarded to a student by a school

1-8

district and/or an LEA, but such certificates shall be in addition to and shall not be used as a

1-9

substitute for or in lieu of a diploma.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

     This act would provide that students who complete the graduation requirements of an

alternative learning program approved by a school district would be awarded a diploma upon

2-3

graduation. Certificates of achievement and other types would still be awarded, but such

2-4

certificates would be in addition to and not a substitute for a diploma.

     This act would take effect upon passage.
