RELATING TO STATE AFFAIRS AND GOVERNMENT - RHODE ISLAND JUSTICE

COMMISSION

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 42-26-6 of the General Laws in Chapter 42-26 entitled "Rhode

Island Justice Commission" is hereby amended to read as follows:

     42-26-6. Criminal justice policy board -- Appointment of members. -- The criminal

1-4

justice policy board shall consist of:

1-5

      (1) The attorney general;

1-6

      (2) The superintendent of the state police and director of the department of public safety;

1-7

      (3) The public defender;

1-8

      (4) The director of the department of corrections;

1-9

      (5) The director of the department of human services;

1-10

      (6) The director of the department of mental health, retardation, and hospitals;

1-11

      (7) The chairperson of the state board of governors for higher education;

1-12

      (8) The director of the department of children, youth, and families;

1-13

      (9) The chief justice of the family court;

1-14

      (10) The president of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association;

1-15

      (11) One police chief selected by the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association;

1-16

      (12) The chief justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court;

1-17

      (13) The presiding justice of the superior court;

1-18

      (14) The chief judge of the district court;

      (15) Seven (7) members of the general assembly; four (4) from the house of

2-20

representatives, at least one of whom shall be a member of the minority, to be appointed by the

2-21

speaker, and three (3) from the senate, at least one of whom shall be a member of the minority, to

2-22

be appointed by the president of the senate;

      (16)(15) The executive director of the Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns;

2-24

      (17)(16) The director of health;

2-25

      (18)(17) The director of the division of fire safety;

2-26

      (19)(18) One university or college faculty member with a research background in

2-27

criminal justice appointed by the governor;

2-28

      (20)(19) Four (4) citizens appointed by the governor;

2-29

      (21)(20) Three (3) representatives appointed by the governor from community service

2-30

organizations.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.
