H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING THE HONORABLE FRANCIS J. DARIGAN, JR., ON THE

OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE RHODE ISLAND SUPERIOR COURT

     WHEREAS, The Honorable Francis J. Darigan, Jr., an Associate Justice of the Rhode

1-2

Island Family Superior Court and a highly respected adjudicator, is retiring on February 29, 2012,

1-3

after twenty-eight distinguished years on the bench; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, A graduate of LaSalle Academy, Judge Darigan earned his Bachelor’s

1-5

degree from Providence College, his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School, and his

1-6

Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Rhode Island; and

1-7

     WHEREAS, Judge Darigan was appointed to the Rhode Island District Court by then-

1-8

Governor J. Joseph Garrahy on January 26, 1984, and on June 28 of 1991, he was appointed

1-9

Associate Justice of the Superior Court by then-Governor Bruce Sundlun; and

1-10

     WHEREAS, Previous to his appointment on the bench, Justice Darigan served as Legal

1-11

Counsel with the Office of Special Counsel for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation

1-12

and was subsequently named Legal Counsel to the Governor’s Office on Energy and the Public

1-13

Utilities Commission; and

1-14

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island’s Superior Court is the “forum for jury and non-jury trials of

1-15

both civil and criminal matters.” Over the course of Justice Darigan’s tenure on the bench, he has

1-16

worked diligently on a panoply of high profile cases, including the Station nightclub fire and

1-17

cases involving public corruption; and

1-18

     WHEREAS, Judge Darigan has devoted twenty-eight years to Rhode Island’s judicial

1-19

system, stating that he has “enjoyed every day” of his service to this court. He possesses

1-20

compassion and a brilliant legal mind, and he is eminently deserving of our recognition and praise

2-1

for his service to the people of Rhode Island; now, therefore be it

2-2

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

2-3

Providence Plantations hereby expresses our sincere gratitude to Associate Justice Francis J.

2-4

Darigan, Jr., for presiding with compassion, fairness, and justice over matters before the Rhode

2-5

Island Superior Court.  We furthermore congratulate him on his retirement and wish him good

2-6

health, fulfillment, and much happiness; and be it further    

2-7

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-8

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Francis J. Darigan, Jr.
