PROCLAIMING MARCH 28, 2012, AS "SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION DAY" IN THE

STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Social work is a profession for those who possess a strong desire to help

improve peoples’ lives. Social workers help individuals function the best way they can in their

1-3

environment and in their relationships. They help to solve people's personal and family problems;

1-4

and

1-5

     WHEREAS, Social work education prepares students for work as professionally qualified

1-6

social workers. The goal is to help develop competent and accountable social workers who are

1-7

able to strengthen families and their communities; and

1-8

     WHEREAS, Employment of social workers is expected to increase by 16 percent during

1-9

the 2008-2018 decade, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. Concern about

1-10

crime, juvenile delinquency, and services for individuals with physical, psychological, and

1-11

cognitive disabilities, and individuals and families in crisis are impelling the necessity for more

1-12

social workers; and

1-13

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island College School of Social Work, Providence College

1-14

Department of Social Work, Salve Regina University Department of Social Work, and the

1-15

Community College of Rhode Island Social Work Education Program are helping to fill the

1-16

pressing call for future social workers through comprehensive education and training programs;

1-17

now, therefore be it

1-18

     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

1-19

Providence Plantations hereby proclaims March 28, 2012, to be “Social Work Education Day” in

1-20

the State of Rhode Island. We encourage professors, teachers, principals, students, and all of the

2-1

citizens of this state to participate in this day, acknowledging the wonderful education by Rhode

2-2

Island College School of Social Work, Providence College Department of Social Work, Salve

2-3

Regina University Department of Social Work, and the Community College of Rhode Island

2-4

Social Work Education Program; and be it further

2-5

     RESOLVED, That this House recognizes and honors the great benefits and invaluable

2-6

service professionally-trained social workers provide to the citizens of this state; and be it further

2-7

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-8

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Rhode Island Chapter of the National

2-9

Association of Social Workers, Rhode Island College School of Social Work, Providence College

2-10

Department of Social Work, Salve Regina University Department of Social Work, and the

2-11

Community College of Rhode Island Social Work Education Program.
