PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF APRIL, 2012, TO BE "CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION

MONTH" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Child abuse and neglect are community-wide conditions and problems, and

finding solutions depends on the involvement of people in the community; and

1-3

     WHEREAS, Approximately three million children are reported abused and neglected in

1-4

this country each year, with nearly three thousand of these children residing in Rhode Island; and

1-5

     WHEREAS, The effects of child abuse and neglect are felt by whole communities and

1-6

need to be addressed by the entire community; and

1-7

     WHEREAS, Prevent Child Abuse Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Family and Children’s

1-8

Trust Fund at the Department of Children, Youth, and Families, and the Family Care Community

1-9

Partnerships are sponsoring several events throughout April to heighten public awareness of

1-10

abuse and neglect in communities around the state. These events will provide information and

1-11

material that support families to prevent child maltreatment and celebrate people who work with

1-12

and support children and families; and

1-13

     WHEREAS, A statewide “Pinwheels for Prevention” campaign has been launched

1-14

through the media, public schools, libraries, social services, and businesses during the month of

1-15

April to celebrate and bring awareness of the great potential of all children in Rhode Island and

1-16

the need to strengthen all families with support and nurturing; and

1-17

     WHEREAS, The “Pinwheels for Prevention” campaign includes the planting of

1-18

“Pinwheel Gardens” statewide celebrating community partnerships for strengthening the family

1-19

and protecting all children from abuse and neglect; and

2-20

     WHEREAS, Effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships

2-21

created among social service agencies, schools, religious and civic organizations, law

2-22

enforcement agencies, and the business community; and

2-23

     WHEREAS, All citizens should become more aware of the negative effects of child

2-24

abuse and the benefits of its prevention within the community, and become involved in

2-25

supporting parents to raise their children in a safe, nurturing environment; now, therefore be it

2-26

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

2-27

Providence Plantations does hereby proclaim April, 2012, as “Child Abuse and Neglect

2-28

Prevention Month” in the state of Rhode Island and calls upon all citizens, community agencies,

2-29

religious organizations, medical facilities, and businesses to increase their participation in our

2-30

efforts to prevent child abuse, thereby strengthening the communities in which we live; and be it

2-31

further

2-32

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-33

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Prevent Child Abuse Rhode Island

2-34

President, Cheryl Patnaude.
