PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF JUNE 18TH - 24TH, 2012, TO BE "AMATEUR RADIO

WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) is the leading organization for

Amateur Radio in the United States; and

1-3

     WHEREAS, Amateur Radio or “ham radio” operators will be celebrating over a century

1-4

of “the miracle of human voice broadcast over the airwaves”; and

1-5

     WHEREAS, Amateur Radio provides a bridge between peoples, societies, and countries

1-6

by creating friendships and through the sharing of ideas; and

1-7

     WHEREAS, There are more than 2.5 million Amateur Radio operators worldwide, with

1-8

more than 650,000 in the United States and approximately 2,000 in Rhode Island; and  

1-9

     WHEREAS, Amateur Radio operators have provided countless hours of community

1-10

service without compensation; and

1-11

     WHEREAS, During June of this year, as they have for decades, Rhode Island’s “ham”

1-12

operators will join amateur operators from across the United States and Canada in setting  up a

1-13

24-hour emergency encampment exercise, known as Field Day, demonstrating their skills and

1-14

readiness to provide emergency communications; and

1-15

     WHEREAS, Over the past decade, Amateur Radio operators have provided critical

1-16

emergency communications when other systems failed during the devastating events of Hurricane

1-17

Katrina and, more recently, during the catastrophes in Haiti and Chile; now, therefore be it

1-18

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

1-19

Providence Plantations hereby proclaims the week of June 18th - 24th, 2012, to be “Amateur

1-20

Radio Week.”  We furthermore thank our local “hams” for their diligence and dedication to our

2-1

state’s communication preparedness; and be it further

2-2

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-3

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Bob Beaudet, W1YRC, ARRL Section

2-4

Manager, Rhode Island Section ARRL, and the National Association for Amateur Radio.
