CELEBRATING "BIKE-TO-WORK DAY" ON FRIDAY, MAY 18, 2012, IN THE STATE OF | |
RHODE ISLAND | |

     WHEREAS, “Bike-to-Work Day” is celebrated annually across the United States in order |

to promote the use of bicycles as an option for commuting to work; and |
1-3 |
     WHEREAS, Bike-to-Work Day was originated by the League of American Bicyclists in |
1-4 |
1956 and is a part of Bike-to-Work Week, which is in turn part of National Bike Month; and |
1-5 |
     WHEREAS, Bicycle commuting is a safe and healthy alternative to driving an |
1-6 |
automobile to work each day and it provides economic and environmental benefits to our |
1-7 |
communities; and |
1-8 |
     WHEREAS, Widespread bike commuting helps to lessen traffic congestion and noise, |
1-9 |
reduces associated greenhouse gas emissions, and decreases the use of and dependence upon |
1-10 |
finite energy sources; and |
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, Rhode Island has more than 50 miles of paved bike paths, myriad bike lanes |
1-12 |
and bike routes, and 40 additional miles of paved bike path currently under design; and |
1-13 |
     WHEREAS, Our state is quickly becoming one of the nation’s most "bike friendly" states |
1-14 |
and the advantages to our citizenry and communities should be promoted and recognized; now, |
1-15 |
therefore be it |

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
1-17 |
Providence Plantations hereby proclaims Friday, May 18, 2012, to be “Bike-to-Work Day” in the |
1-18 |
State of Rhode Island. We furthermore support and encourage all the citizens of our state to |
1-19 |
participate by giving bike commuting a try; and be it further |
2-20 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-21 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the President of the League of American |
2-22 |
Bicyclists. |
