CELEBRATING "NATIONAL SALVATION ARMY WEEK" ON MAY 13TH THROUGH

MAY 19TH IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, In 1856, William Booth began preaching hope and salvation to a

congregation that was composed of the most needy, neglected, and downtrodden in the East End

1-3

of London. His aim was to lead people to Christ and link them to a church for further spiritual

1-4

guidance; and

1-5

     WHEREAS, Since its humble beginnings in Great Britain, the Salvation Army has

1-6

attracted scores of followers who are dedicated to providing spiritual guidance and humanitarian

1-7

relief to people throughout the world; and

1-8

     WHEREAS, In 1879, Lieutenant Eliza Shirley held the first meeting of The Salvation

1-9

Army in America, in Philadelphia.  In 1954, “National Salvation Army Week” was first

1-10

recognized and declared by President Dwight Eisenhower; and

1-11

     WHEREAS, Currently, the Salvation Army is a world-wide organization that is meeting

1-12

human needs, without discrimination, by utilizing its foundation and mission of “Doing the Most

1-13

Good”; and

1-14

     WHEREAS, Through countless acts of service, provided by more than 3,411,613

1-15

volunteers, 400,055 members, and more than 200,000 additional personnel, the Salvation Army,

1-16

as well as those who support its mission through contributions, have actively assisted more than

1-17

29,418,530 people through more than 7,821 Centers of Operation and more than 400,055

1-18

members; now, therefore be it  

1-19

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

1-20

Providence Plantations hereby celebrates “National Salvation Army Week” on May 13th through

2-1

May 19th.  We furthermore implore community members to express their appreciation for the

2-2

Salvation Army’s good works and to follow their example of serving a cause greater than

2-3

themselves during this week and throughout the year; and be it further

2-4

     RESOLVED, The Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-5

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Major David Champlin, Divisional Commander

2-6

of the Southern New England Division of the Salvation Army.
