CONGRATULATING THE FEDERAL HILL HOUSE ASSOCIATION ON THE 125TH | |
ANNIVERSARY OF ITS FOUNDING | |

     WHEREAS, In 1887, Alida Sprague Whitmarsh and Harriet C. Richards founded the Mt. |

Pleasant Working Girls Club & Library; and |
1-3 |
     WHEREAS, Over the next few decades, the organization relocated, renamed, and |
1-4 |
expanded its services, eventually acquiring a small tenement on Atwells Avenue and adopting the |
1-5 |
name of the Federal Hill House Association (FHHA); and |
1-6 |
     WHEREAS, In 1916, the FHHA moved into new headquarters on Atwells Avenue and |
1-7 |
embraced a “settlement house” philosophy. The Settlement House Movement had begun in |
1-8 |
Britain in 1884, and was dedicated to providing the less fortunate with social and educational |
1-9 |
services. The FHHA broadened its programs in the community by offering these types of services |
1-10 |
in the neighborhood, which was primarily comprised of Italian immigrants; and |
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, After a fire in the early 70s, the FHHA relocated to St. Raphael’s Church on |
1-12 |
Bell Street until the completion of its present home on Courtland Street; and |
1-13 |
     WHEREAS, Today’s Federal Hill House Association is a multi-purpose human services |
1-14 |
agency that helps more than 5,000 individuals a year. Since its inception, the FHHA has been |
1-15 |
supporting Rhode Islanders, both young and old, with early childhood and after school programs |
1-16 |
that are nothing short of revolutionary, and with workforce development, social, and emergency |
1-17 |
services that have proven to be essential and life changing for so many during these economic |
1-18 |
times; and |
2-19 |
     WHEREAS, A gala Awards Dinner will be held on June 30th to celebrate the |
2-20 |
organization’s 125th Anniversary and to honor those members of the community who, together |
2-21 |
with the Federal Hill House Association, have gone above and beyond in their efforts and |
2-22 |
dedication to making Rhode Island a better place to live and raise our families; now, therefore be |
2-23 |
it |
2-24 |
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
2-25 |
Providence Plantations hereby honors and congratulates members and staff of the Federal Hill |
2-26 |
House Association on the occasion of the organization’s 125th Anniversary. We applaud their |
2-27 |
accomplishments and wish them many more years of serving and enriching the community; and |
2-28 |
be it further |

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-30 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Nina Pande, Executive Director of the Federal |
2-31 |
Hill House Association. |
