HONORING REPRESENTATIVE ROBERT A. WATSON

     WHEREAS, It is with regret that this House has learned of the impending departure of

1-2

The Honorable Robert Watson, who has made the decision not to seek re-election; and

1-3

     WHEREAS, Bob Watson graduated from Bishop Hendricken High School.  He attended

1-4

Rhode Island College and earned his B.A. from the University of Denver in 1982.  Continuing his

1-5

education, he attained his Juris Doctor from Catholic University-Columbus School of Law, in

1-6

1986; and

1-7

     WHEREAS, In November of 1988, Bob Watson was elected to the Rhode Island Senate. 

1-8

In the subsequent election cycle, then-Senator Watson chose to run for, and was successfully

1-9

elected to, the Rhode Island House of Representatives in what is now District 30, which includes

1-10

East Greenwich and West Greenwich; and  

1-11

     WHEREAS, Representative Watson has held myriad leadership roles in the State House

1-12

and within the community.  He served as House Minority Leader for more than a dozen years and

1-13

is currently a member of the House Oversight Committee; and

1-14

     WHEREAS, Professionally, Representative Watson has served as a Commissioner on the

1-15

Commission on Judicial Tenure and Discipline, a member of the American and Rhode Island Bar

1-16

Associations, a member of the East Greenwich Lion's Club, and a member and past Chair of the

1-17

East Greenwich Republican Town Committee; and

1-18

     WHEREAS, Incredibly adroit at the art of debate, Representative Watson has initiated,

1-19

elucidated, and defended copious pieces of legislation during his illustrious tenure; and      

1-20

     WHEREAS, After twenty-four years, Representative Watson’s political career at the

1-21

State House may be coming to an end, but his legacy of true dedication as a public servant will

2-1

continuously live on through those who had the pleasure to know and work with him, and through

2-2

the paths of leadership he left behind; now, therefore be it

2-3

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

2-4

Providence Plantations hereby bids adieu to the Honorable Robert Watson and wishes him good

2-5

health and the best of luck in the years to come; and be it further

2-6

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-7

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to The Honorable Robert A. Watson.
