EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF PATRICIA M. GOODWIN | |

     WHEREAS, It is with profound sadness and regret that this Senate has learned of the |

passing of Patricia M. Goodwin, a generous and loving woman who was deeply devoted to her |
1-3 |
family. Patricia was the wife of former Senator Thomas N. Goodwin. Tom and Pat were married |
1-4 |
for fifty-three years. The Senate family grieves along with Tom and their daughters, Senator |
1-5 |
Maryellen Goodwin, Sheila A. Connelly and her husband, Paul, and Maureen P. LaRocque and |
1-6 |
her husband, Jeffrey, four loving grandchildren, Marygrace Heywood, Teresa Rose, John Paul |
1-7 |
LaRocque, and Liam Thomas Connelly, and her sister, Elizabeth A. Hynes; and |
1-8 |
     WHEREAS, Pat was born in Providence on Saint Patrick’s Day seventy-six years ago, a |
1-9 |
daughter of the late William J. and Mary E. (McGrath) Hogan. She lived in the Smith Hill |
1-10 |
neighborhood for many years before moving to North Providence eighteen years ago; and |
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, Pat was a genealogist for the State of Rhode Island, Department of Vital |
1-12 |
Records, for eighteen years, retiring in 1997. In retirement she and her daughter, Maureen, hosted |
1-13 |
Perfect Beginnings Family Christian Day Care at her North Providence home; and |
1-14 |
     WHEREAS, A 1949 graduate of Tyler School and a 1952 graduate of Saint Xavier |
1-15 |
Academy, Pat attended Providence College. She was acting deputy Recorder of Deeds for the |
1-16 |
City of Providence from 1952 until her mother, Mary, became ill in 1959; and |
1-17 |
     WHEREAS, Pat was a faithful communicant of Saint Patrick Church; and |
1-18 |
     WHEREAS, A member of the 1st Senatorial District Committee and the Saint Xavier |
1-19 |
Alumnae Association, Pat was also an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. She enjoyed both |
1-20 |
watching the game, and letting her son-in-law, Jeff, and every Yankee fan, know about it when |
2-1 |
the Red Sox were doing well; and |
2-2 |
     WHEREAS, Welcoming and warm to everyone she met, Pat opened the doors of her |
2-3 |
home for all to enjoy good food and good company during holidays and special occasions, such |
2-4 |
as her birthday, which she loved. From Christmas carolers to Smith Hill neighborhood gatherings |
2-5 |
at her house during the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, she brought joy to family, friends, and |
2-6 |
neighbors throughout the year with her hospitality and her infectious smile; and |
2-7 |
     WHEREAS, A remarkable and gracious woman whose giving heart, magnanimous spirit, |
2-8 |
and omnipresent good humor greatly enriched the lives of her family, friends, and everyone |
2-9 |
around her, Pat filled her life was filled with good deeds and good times. She represented all that |
2-10 |
is best in people and in our state. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered for her grace, |
2-11 |
humor, and faith; now, therefore be it |
2-12 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-13 |
hereby offers its sincere condolences to Pat’s husband, Thomas, her daughters Maryellen, Sheila, |
2-14 |
and Maureen, her grandchildren Marygrace, Teresa, John, and Liam, and her sister, Elizabeth; |
2-15 |
and be it further |
2-16 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-17 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to The Honorable Thomas N. Goodwin and |
2-18 |
Family. |
