It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |

     SECTION 1. Section 12-7-19 of the General Laws in Chapter 12-7 entitled "Arrest" is |

hereby amended to read as follows: |

     12-7-19. Arrest after close pursuit by officers from cities or towns. -- Any member of |
1-4 |
a duly organized municipal peace unit of another city or town of the state who enters any city or |
1-5 |
town in close pursuit and continues within any city or town in such close pursuit of a person in |
1-6 |
order to |
1-7 |
the other city or town shall have the same authority to arrest and hold in custody the person as |
1-8 |
members of a duly organized municipal peace unit of any city or town have to arrest and hold in |
1-9 |
custody a person on the ground that he or she has violated the motor vehicle code in any city or |
1-10 |
town. |
1-11 |
     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |

     This act would change the word “arrest” to “stop” to describe the action a police officer |

from one city or town crosses into another city or town in close pursuit takes. He or she then |

would have the authority to arrest the person pursued for violation of the motor vehicle code. |
