EXPRESSING OUR DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF MARTHA JANE | |

     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of Martha |

Jane Fogarty, a remarkable woman whose love, compassion, and willingness to help those in |
1-3 |
need left an indelible impression on everyone she met; and |
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, The daughter of the late Benjamin and Lucienne Hague, Martha was the |
1-5 |
cherished wife of the late Charles J. Fogarty, former State Senator and longtime head of the U.S. |
1-6 |
Small Business Administration. Martha was the loving mother of Corleen Buckley, former Lt. |
1-7 |
Gov. Charles J. Fogarty, State Sen. Paul Fogarty, Martha F. Dunn, and Ann Harwood. She was |
1-8 |
the proud grandmother of Erin Nichols, Matthew Buckley, Patrick, Brendan and Daniel Fogarty, |
1-9 |
Jeffrey, John and Allison Gabel, and Jacob and Samuel Harwood; and loving great-grandmother |
1-10 |
to Caroline and Ethan Nichols; and |
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, After graduating from Central High School, Martha worked for the former |
1-12 |
New England Telephone Company before going on to work with her late husband, Charles, in the |
1-13 |
management of Fogarty Nurseries. She was also a real estate broker and the intrepid Glocester |
1-14 |
correspondent for the Observer Newspaper; and |
1-15 |
     WHEREAS, A woman of tremendous faith, Martha was an active member of St. Philip’s |
1-16 |
Church, serving as a member of the Rosary and Altar Society, Perpetual Adoration, and an |
1-17 |
integral part of the Catholic Charity Drive for many years; and |
1-18 |
     WHEREAS, An industrious civic booster who worked hard to better her community, |
1-19 |
Martha was a volunteer at the Harmony Library for many years, a charter member and past |
1-20 |
president of the Glocester Lady Lions Club, and an elected voting moderator for the Town of |
2-1 |
Glocester; and |
2-2 |
     WHEREAS, Even though we are diminished by this loss and mourn the passing of |
2-3 |
Martha, so must we celebrate the spirit, generosity, and courage with which she lived every day |
2-4 |
of her life; now, therefore be it |
2-5 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-6 |
hereby expresses our deepest condolences on the passing of Martha J. Fogarty; and be it further |
2-7 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the State be and he hereby is authorized and directed |
2-8 |
to transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Corleen Buckley, former Lt. Gov. Charles J. |
2-9 |
Fogarty, State Sen. Paul Fogarty, Martha F. Dunn, and Ann Harwood. |
