PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 15TH, 2012, TO BE "I LOVE LIBRARIES DAY" IN THE | |
STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

     WHEREAS, Books enrich our lives, help shape our outlook of the world, and provide the |

cornerstone for a brighter future; and |
1-3 |
     WHEREAS, Libraries play a vital role in providing a panoply of books, media, and other |
1-4 |
resources, and with the expansion of electronic networks linking libraries and their resources, |
1-5 |
library users can access world information more easily, and |
1-6 |
     WHEREAS, Libraries promote literacy and inspire creativity in Americans. Literacy |
1-7 |
skills are essential for effective participation in our democracy, in the workplace, and in the |
1-8 |
community. Lady Bird Johnson once said "Perhaps no place in any community is so totally |
1-9 |
democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest"; and |
1-10 |
     WHEREAS, Libraries enable individuals to make informed decisions about their self- |
1-11 |
governance by promoting unrestricted access to information and by serving as community centers |
1-12 |
for lifelong learning; and |
1-13 |
     WHEREAS, Libraries provide entry to important research about health, economics, |
1-14 |
housing, the environment, and countless other areas to support better living conditions and to help |
1-15 |
people lead longer, more productive, and fulfilling lives; and |
1-16 |
     WHEREAS, Libraries support a competitive workforce with basic literacy programs, |
1-17 |
computers, and other resources to help children and adults learn to find, evaluate, and use |
1-18 |
information they need for their jobs, health, education, and other needs; and |
1-19 |
     WHEREAS, In a world undergoing constant change, libraries provide enduring |
1-20 |
connections to the past and future of our communities, nations, and civilizations; now, therefore |

be it |

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-3 |
hereby proclaims February 15th of 2012 to be "I Love Libraries Day" in the State of Rhode Island. |
2-4 |
We furthermore urge all the citizens of the state to visit their local library and thank a librarian for |
2-5 |
making this unique and wonderful institution possible; and be it further |
2-6 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-7 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island Library Association. |
