RECOGNIZING MARCH 12-18, 2012, AS NATIONAL MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS | |
AWARENESS WEEK IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

     WHEREAS, Multiple Sclerosis currently afflicts more than 400,000 Americans and more |
1-2 |
than 2 million people worldwide; and |
1-3 |
     WHEREAS, Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, and Multiple |
1-4 |
Sclerosis is 3 times more common in women than men; and |
1-5 |
     WHEREAS, Multiple Sclerosis is an unpredictable disease of the central nervous system |
1-6 |
that can cause blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, |
1-7 |
numbness, extreme fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, paralysis, blindness, and |
1-8 |
more; and |
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, through individual gifts, legacies |
1-10 |
and bequests, special events, and corporate contributions, is dedicated to finding a cure for this |
1-11 |
disease through research efforts and support for those that suffer from it; and |
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society maintains an office in Warwick to |
1-13 |
offer vital support and programs to those living with multiple sclerosis and their family members; |
1-14 |
and |
1-15 |
     WHEREAS, The people of Rhode Island are similarly committed to the eradication of |
1-16 |
this disease and support the treatment of fellow citizens that suffer from it; and |
1-17 |
     WHEREAS, This Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
1-18 |
encourages private efforts to enhance research funding and education programs that address these |
1-19 |
diseases; now, therefore be it |
2-20 |
      RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-21 |
hereby joins with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in designating the week of March 12-18, |
2-22 |
2012, as National Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week to enhance the understanding of multiple |
2-23 |
sclerosis, and to encourage participation in voluntary activities to support the local programs and |
2-24 |
services offered by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Rhode Island Chapter, and the |
2-25 |
funding of research programs to find a cure for this disease; and be it further |
2-26 |
      RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-27 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Warwick office of the National Multiple |
2-28 |
Sclerosis Society. |
