DECLARING 2012 AS THE YEAR OF THE GIRL AND CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF | |

     WHEREAS, March 12, 2012, marks the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the |

United States of America, which began in 1912 when Savannah, Georgia native Juliette “Daisy” |
1-3 |
Gordon Low gathered 18 girls to provide them the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, |
1-4 |
and spiritually; and |
1-5 |
     WHEREAS, For 100 years, Girl Scouting has helped build millions of girls and women |
1-6 |
of courage, confidence, and character; and |
1-7 |
     WHEREAS, The award winning Girl Scout Leadership Program helps girls discover |
1-8 |
themselves and their values, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better place; |
1-9 |
and |
1-10 |
     WHEREAS, The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting, requires |
1-11 |
girls to make a measureable and sustainable difference in their community, assess a need and |
1-12 |
design a solution, find the resources and support to make it happen, complete the project, and also |
1-13 |
inspire others to sustain it; and |
1-14 |
     WHEREAS, The Gold Award honors leadership in the Girl Scout tradition, and Gold |
1-15 |
Award recipients have already changed the world as high school students; and |
1-16 |
     WHEREAS, Core programs around Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math |
1-17 |
(STEM), environmental stewardship, healthy living, financial literacy, and global citizenship help |
1-18 |
girls develop a solid foundation in leadership; and |
1-19 |
     WHEREAS, Since its founding in 2000, the Girl Scout Research Institute has become an |
1-20 |
internationally recognized center for original research, research reviews, and surveys that provide |
2-1 |
significant insights into the lives of girls; and |
2-2 |
     WHEREAS, Through the dedication, time, and talent of volunteers of different |
2-3 |
backgrounds, abilities, and areas of expertise, the Girl Scout program is brought to over 9,400 |
2-4 |
girls in grades K-12 across the State of Rhode Island and beyond; and |
2-5 |
     WHEREAS, Today, more than 50 million American women are Girl Scout alumnae, 3.3 |
2-6 |
million girls and adult volunteers are active members, and Girl Scouts is the largest member of |
2-7 |
the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, a global movement comprised of more |
2-8 |
than 10 million girls in 145 countries worldwide; now, therefore be it |
2-9 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-10 |
hereby applauds the Girl Scouts of the United States of America for its 100 years of leadership |
2-11 |
and expertise as the voice for and of girls, and proudly proclaims 2012 as “Year of the Girl”; and |
2-12 |
be it further |

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-14 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island. |
