CONGRATULATING JOHN DIAS ON BEING CHOSEN AS NEWPORT ELKS LODGE 104, | |
CITIZEN OF THE YEAR, 2012 | |

     WHEREAS, The Newport Elks Lodge 104, Citizen of the Year Award is given to a |

person who has shown leadership in the community, has contributed voluntary service, and is |
1-3 |
recognized as being an all-around good citizen; and |
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, John Dias has been chosen as the 2012 recipient of this prestigious award |
1-5 |
due to a long career of public and volunteer service that is an inspiration to us all; and |
1-6 |
     WHEREAS, John Dias’ enthusiasm, spirit, and integrity has had a profound effect on the |
1-7 |
lives of many young men and women in Rhode Island, through his life’s dedication to teaching |
1-8 |
and coaching youth and young adults; and |
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, John has had a long career in the Newport Public Schools as a Teacher, |
1-10 |
Coach, Dean of Students, and Athletic Director, where he has consistently and selflessly spent his |
1-11 |
time, talent, and energy to guide the youth of Aquidneck Island; and |
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, John’s influence reached the college level at Salve Regina and across the |
1-13 |
bay to the University of Rhode Island, where he coached basketball and women’s softball, and |
1-14 |
onto the radio waves of WADK, where he still keeps abreast of high school and college |
1-15 |
basketball, broadcasting as a color analyst; and |
1-16 |
     WHEREAS, John’s contributions to the many civic organizations he is affiliated with are |
1-17 |
too numerous to list, and have stretched across many years and earned the appreciation of |
1-18 |
countless people; now, therefore be it |
1-19 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
1-20 |
hereby congratulates John Dias, an exceptional man who is truly deserving of the gratitude and |
2-1 |
recognition he has been afforded, on being named the Newport Elks Lodge 104, Citizen of the |
2-2 |
Year. We applaud his accomplishments and wish him the very best health and continued success |
2-3 |
in all his future endeavors; and be it further |
2-4 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-5 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. John Dias. |
