PROCLAIMING APRIL 12TH TO BE "LEAGUE DAY AT THE STATE HOUSE 2012"

     WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that

encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase

1-3

understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and

1-4

advocacy; and

1-5

     WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters of the United States, founded by suffragists

1-6

in 1920, celebrated its 92nd anniversary on February 14, 2012 and continues to study and advocate

1-7

nationally for issues such as fair elections, open government, campaign finance reform, women's

1-8

rights, and clean air and environmental issues. Currently, the League is in the process of a

1-9

national study on privatization of public services; and   

1-10

     WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters of Rhode Island also celebrated its 92nd

1-11

anniversary in 2012; has recently completed a two-year statewide study of and reached consensus

1-12

on basic principles for education financing in Rhode Island; followed the state redistricting

1-13

process, and is lobbying this legislative session on redistricting, open records, open meetings,

1-14

ethics, election issues, campaign finance reporting and a woman’s right to choice -- positions all

1-15

based on studies and adopted at the state and national levels. Live broadcasts this fall of non-

1-16

partisan Congressional candidate forums on ABC6-TV and RI Public Radio are being organized

1-17

and planned by the Voter Services Committee of the League; and

1-18

     WHEREAS, Local Leagues of Women Voters in Providence, West Bay, Newport

1-19

County, and South Kingstown/ Narragansett will be registering voters, organizing local non-

1-20

partisan forums for many Rhode Island legislative, town/city council and school committee

1-21

candidates, and holding meetings discussing issues of interest to members and citizens regarding

2-1

the government's role in education, charter schools, pension reform, and privatization of other

2-2

public services; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-4

hereby acknowledges and declares April 12, 2012, to be “League Day at the State House 2012”;

2-5

and be it further

2-6

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-7

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Derry Riding, President of the League of

2-8

Women Voters of Rhode Island.
