CONGRATULATING BETH MILHAM FOR RECEIVING A 2012 NEWPORT DAILY NEWS | |
COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD | |

     WHEREAS, The Newport Daily News Community Service Award annually honors |

individuals who have contributed greatly to the community with years of dedicated, unselfish |
1-3 |
service. One of the 2012 recipients is Beth Milham; and |
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, Beth Milham, a Newport resident and retired nurse, grew up in the Boston |
1-5 |
area and moved to Rhode Island in 1972 when her husband, Russ, then a United States Navy |
1-6 |
Lieutenant, was transferred to Newport. They decided to stay and became very involved in a |
1-7 |
variety of social and environmental causes; and |
1-8 |
     WHEREAS, Beth was the co-founder of Aquidneck Island Ecology in the 1970s and |
1-9 |
helped organize the first Harvest Fair at the Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown, where she |
1-10 |
was a docent in the education program; and |
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, Beth has served in many roles at Channing Memorial Church and helped |
1-12 |
start the Green Neighborhood Energy Challenge, a result of the 2007 “Step it up” climate change |
1-13 |
education program. She has also served on the Newport Energy and Environment Commission |
1-14 |
and helped organize a 2009 energy expo that featured 75 exhibitors and drew over 400 visitors to |
1-15 |
Easton’s Beach; and |
1-16 |
     WHEREAS, In addition to her work to preserve and protect our environment, Beth is a |
1-17 |
very passionate and active supporter of gay rights. She formed a local “Straight But Not Narrow |
1-18 |
Coalition,” has worked tirelessly on behalf of AIDS education and awareness, and helped bring |
1-19 |
the “NAMES” project, quilts bearing the names of those who died from AIDS, to local schools; |
1-20 |
now, therefore be it |

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |

hereby congratulates Beth Milham for receiving a 2012 Newport Daily News Community Service |

Award. We applaud her contributions to Newport County and her example of service to others; |
2-4 |
and be it further |

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-6 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Beth Milham. |
