RECOGNIZING THE HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS OF URI, NE ALLIANCE, AND | |
HOSPICES OF HOPE ROMANIA FOR THEIR MYRIAD CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE | |
PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND AND THE WORLD COMMUNITY | |

     WHEREAS, Hospices of Hope Romania (HOH) was founded in 1991 to provide |
1-2 |
palliative care and improve the quality of life for the terminally ill and their families in Romania |
1-3 |
and surrounding countries. Their efforts have earned praise and recognition not only from the |
1-4 |
medical community, but also from the world community for providing excellence in patient care, |
1-5 |
support and financing for hospice, homecare, and hospitals, and for pursuing and supporting |
1-6 |
multicultural educational partnerships; and |
1-7 |
     WHEREAS, The University of Rhode Island, the New England Alliance for Hospices of |
1-8 |
Hope – Romania (NE Alliance), and the Hospices of Hope Romania, have joined forces in a |
1-9 |
humanitarian and educational effort that has produced significant and measurable increases in the |
1-10 |
standard of care for people in Romania and around the world; and |
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, The University of Rhode Island has supported and promoted training, cross |
1-12 |
cultural multidisciplinary teleconferences, and various collaborative research and publications |
1-13 |
between the university’s faculty and students and their counterparts in Romania involved in |
1-14 |
palliative care; and |
1-15 |
      WHEREAS, The NE Alliance has participated as faculty in symposiums in Romania, |
1-16 |
introduced teleconferencing with Romanian nurses, developed an international partnership model, |
1-17 |
raised funds for professional development, provided educational resources, and established an on- |
1-18 |
going mentorship model in their efforts to enhance and advance hospice nursing practices in |
1-19 |
Romania; and |
2-20 |
     WHEREAS, Mohandas Gandhi once stated, “You must be the change you wish to see |
2-21 |
in the world.” The relationship among URI, the NE Alliance, and the HOH has established an |
2-22 |
exemplary model of how collaboration can be a catalyst that overcomes language, cultural, and |
2-23 |
governmental barriers, and serves not only as an example for others to emulate, but also as a |
2-24 |
beacon of hope to those in need; now, therefore be it |
2-25 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-26 |
hereby recognizes and honors the University of Rhode Island, the NE Alliance, and the Hospices |
2-27 |
of Hope Romania for their outstanding collaboration and contributions; and be it further |
2-28 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-29 |
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the University of Rhode Island, the NE |
2-30 |
Alliance, and the Hospices of Hope Romania. |
