AWARD FROM THE NEW ENGLAND OFFICE OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL | |
PROTECTION AGENCY IN RECOGNITION OF HIS EXCEPTIONAL WORK AND | |
COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT IN 2011 | |

WHEREAS, Greg Gerritt has devoted his life to the protection of the environment and |

the preservation of our natural resources. He grew up in New York City, but developed an early |
1-3 |
affinity for and appreciation of the woods and nature. He regularly visited the Bronx Zoo and the |
1-4 |
American Museum of Natural History as a child and became interested in science and using |
1-5 |
science to preserve the environment; and |
1-6 |
WHEREAS, Greg organized his high school for the first Earth Day and has been |
1-7 |
immersed in the greening of America ever since. His academic background is in evolutionary |
1-8 |
biology and anthropology, but he decided that a life of living in and working with nature was |
1-9 |
preferable to an academic career. He has built an award-winning solar house and an amazing |
1-10 |
woodlot, works daily with soil and compost to improve garden fertility, and has run a successful |
1-11 |
social carpentry business; and |
1-12 |
WHEREAS, Greg moved with his wife to Providence to be closer to aging parents. He |
1-13 |
currently works part-time for the Environmental Council of Rhode Island. He organizes events, |
1-14 |
talks in schools, and coordinates efforts to build community support for the preservation of our |
1-15 |
environment and precious natural resources. For his hard work and commitment to these noble |
1-16 |
ideals in 2011, he will receive an Environmental Merit Award from the New England Office of |
1-17 |
the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at Faneuil Hall in Boston on April 25, |
1-18 |
2012; now, therefore be it |

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-20 |
hereby congratulates Mr. Greg Gerritt for receiving an Environmental Award from the EPA. We |
2-21 |
thank him for his lifetime commitment to the protection and preservation of the environment and |
2-22 |
our natural resources; and be it further |
2-23 |
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-24 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Greg Gerritt. |
