     WHEREAS, Sister Margaret Garvey was born in Central Falls on September 13, 1919, to |

John A. and Margaret (Jennings) Garvey. She graduated from Holy Trinity Elementary Catholic |
1-3 |
School and Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Pawtucket; and |
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, Sister Margaret earned a Bachelor’s degree from Catholic College in |
1-5 |
Providence and a Master’s degree in education from St. Rose College in Albany, New York. In |
1-6 |
1937, she entered in the Religious order of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin |
1-7 |
Mary P.B.V.M. and devoted her life to the Lord and to educating young children and preparing |
1-8 |
them academically and spiritually to live good lives; and |
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, Her teaching career spanned forty years. She was the Principal of St. Mary’s |
1-10 |
School in Ayer, Massachusetts, Holy Family School in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and Holy |
1-11 |
Trinity School in Central Falls. Shortly after her retirement, she served the Diocese of Providence |
1-12 |
as a Religion Education Consultant; and |
1-13 |
     WHEREAS, She retired to the Mother House in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, where she |
1-14 |
currently enjoys a quiet, prayerful time with long-time friends and other religious sisters who |
1-15 |
have retired from active parish duties; and |
1-16 |
     WHEREAS, Sister Margaret is the last living child of John and Mary, surviving her |
1-17 |
brothers Raymond and Francis, both former mayors of Central Falls, James, former Principal of |
1-18 |
Central Falls High School and City Clerk of Central Falls, George, a postal worker, John, a |
1-19 |
Central Falls firefighter, and Daniel, an attorney; now, therefore be it |
2-20 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-21 |
hereby congratulates Sister Margaret Garvey P.B.V.M. on the joyous occasion of her 75th |
2-22 |
anniversary as a religious Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We wish her |
2-23 |
continued good health, happiness, and spiritual fulfillment; and be it further |
2-24 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-25 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Sister Margaret Garvey P.B.V.M. |
