PROCLAIMING AUGUST 14, 2012, AS "LIBERTY TREE DAY" IN THE STATE OF | |
RHODE ISLAND | |

     WHEREAS, The early settlers of Boston, Massachusetts, planted an elm tree on Boston |
1-2 |
Neck in 1646, which grew to be tall, stately, and subsequently known as the “Liberty Tree”; and |
1-3 |
     WHEREAS, It was under this tree that colonists, nearly a century later, held many |
1-4 |
meetings and spoke against British tyranny in preparing the groundwork for the independence of |
1-5 |
this nation; and |
1-6 |
     WHEREAS, In one such event, on August 14, 1765, the colonists resisted the Stamp Act |
1-7 |
by hanging in effigy Lord Bute, the author of the Act; and |
1-8 |
     WHEREAS, The Liberty Tree became well known as a rallying place for the leaders of |
1-9 |
the country in search of national independence. In response, in 1775 the British authorities |
1-10 |
ordered the tree to be cut down; and |
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, The Liberty Tree, from its original planting in 1646, grew to be a symbol of |
1-12 |
freedom for citizens everywhere; and |
1-13 |
     WHEREAS, The Town of Coventry, Rhode Island, established a Liberty Tree Memorial |
1-14 |
in front of its Town Hall on June 20, 2009; now, therefore be it |
1-15 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
1-16 |
hereby proclaims August 14, 2012, as “Liberty Tree Day” in the State of Rhode Island. We urge |
1-17 |
all the citizens of the State to support the goals of the Liberty Tree Society in its efforts to |
1-18 |
recognize the significance and role of the Liberty Tree in the formation of our country’s |
1-19 |
independence, and to rededicate themselves to the tradition of our ancestors and to the principles |
1-20 |
of freedom under which our country has grown and prospered; and be it further |
2-1 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-2 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Liberty Tree Society. |
