RECOGNIZING "SAVE THE LAKES" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

     WHEREAS, Invasive plants can limit boating, fishing, and recreational activities, push |

out native species, and reduce water quality. A survey conducted by the department of |
1-3 |
environmental management found that nearly 80 percent of Rhode Island’s fresh water bodies |
1-4 |
contained at least one invasive plant species; and |
1-5 |
     WHEREAS, Founded in 2008, Save the Lakes is an alliance of individuals and |
1-6 |
associations dedicated to improving, protecting, and preserving the fresh water bodies of Rhode |
1-7 |
Island for future generations; and |
1-8 |
     WHEREAS, Save the Lakes is the only statewide organization dedicated to the |
1-9 |
preservation and protection of Rhode Island lakes, ponds, and fresh water resources; and |
1-10 |
     WHEREAS, Save the Lakes is an active force working to protect, restore, and explore |
1-11 |
Rhode Island's fresh water resources; and |
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, Save the Lakes provides a forum for exchange, development, and research |
1-13 |
     of fresh water resources information; and |
1-14 |
     WHEREAS, Save the Lakes has advocated for better fresh water management before |
1-15 |
local, State, and Federal governments and agencies; now, therefore be it |
1-16 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
1-17 |
hereby recognizes "Save the Lakes" in the State of Rhode Island. We applaud its efforts and its |
1-18 |
emphasis on preserving Rhode Island’s fresh water bodies, and wish the organization continued |
1-19 |
success in its future endeavors; and be it further |
1-20 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
1-21 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Judy Colaluca, President and Co-founder of |

Save the Lakes. |
