CONGRATULATING MICHAEL BLACKBURN ON RECEIVING A 2012 GOLDEN APPLE

AWARD

     WHEREAS, Michael Blackburn, a 7th grade math teacher at Western Hills Middle School

in Cranston, has inspired his students to envision the possibilities, to have confidence in

1-3

themselves and their abilities, and to have fun doing math, which is not an easy achievement; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, The Golden Apple Award honors “those who believe in the true spirit of

1-5

teaching by making classrooms a fun and safe place of learning”; and

1-6

     WHEREAS, For his outstanding efforts and dedication to his students and excellence in

1-7

education, Mr. Blackburn was nominated by his students, who wrote “He deserves this more than

1-8

any other teachers!”; and

1-9

     WHEREAS, The names of candidates for the Golden Apple Awards are submitted

1-10

through a nomination process.  The Rhode Island Department of Education, in conjunction with

1-11

Hasbro and NBC-10, then selects and presents those to be honored  as the 2012 recipients of the

1-12

Golden Apple Award; and 

1-13

     WHEREAS, Mr. Blackburn’s genuine love of teaching has not only helped hundreds of

1-14

children to succeed, but has also earned him the praise and admiration of his peers.  His

1-15

dedication and expertise have been tremendous assets to his entire school community; now,

1-16

therefore be it

1-17

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

1-18

hereby congratulates and applauds Michael Blackburn on receiving a 2012 Golden Apple Award.

 We furthermore wish him good health, fulfillment, and success in all his future endeavors; and

be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-3

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Michael Blackburn.
