RECOGNIZING THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF LOCAL 1329 OF THE INTERNATIONAL

LONGSHOREMEN'S ASSOCIATION AND COMMEMORATING THE MASTERS OF THE

CRAFT DOCUMENTARY PHOTO EXHIBIT

     WHEREAS, Local 1329 of the International Longshoremen’s Association (I.L.A.) was

founded in 1933, in Providence, Rhode Island, under the leadership of Manuel Q. Ledo, John F.

1-3

Lopez, and John “Toi” Fernandes; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, I.L.A. Local 1329 was the first union organized in New England consisting

1-5

of a predominantly Cape Verdean membership; and 

1-6

     WHEREAS, Contributing greatly to the economy of this state, Members of Local 1329 of

1-7

the I.L.A. loaded and unloaded cargo in the Port of Providence and vicinity; and

1-8

     WHEREAS, Local 1329 was at the forefront of the national movement for workers’

1-9

rights, organizing two years before the passage of the Wagner Act, which legalized the formation

1-10

of unions in the private sector; and

1-11

     WHEREAS, I.L.A. Local 1329 established a system of seniority in order to assure its

1-12

senior members a fair share of the work and hours towards retirement; and

1-13

     WHEREAS, The members of Local 1329 fought for improvements on the docks, such as

1-14

safety, job securities, and benefits; and

1-15

     WHEREAS, Local 1329 played an important role in the 20th century development of the

1-16

Port of Providence and the waterfront, and continues in the 21st century as a partner in the

1-17

emergence of the Ports of Providence and Davisville as growth centers in Rhode Island’s

1-18

economic recovery plans; and

1-19

     WHEREAS, This year, 2013, marks the 80th Anniversary of the founding of Local 1329

1-20

and is commemorated by the Masters of the Craft Gallery of Memory documentary photo exhibit

at City Hall in Providence; now, therefore be it

2-2

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

2-3

Providence Plantations hereby recognizes the 80th Anniversary of Local 1329 of the I.L.A. and

2-4

commemorates the Masters of the Craft Documentary Photo Exhibit; and be it further  

2-5

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2-6

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Local 1329 of the International

2-7

Longshoremen’s Association.
