CONGRATULATING NISA VILLAREAL ON BEING NAMED THE 2013 | |
"DISTINGUISHED YOUNG WOMAN OF RI" | |

     WHEREAS, Founded in 1958 in Mobile, Alabama, Distinguished Young Women is the |
1-2 |
largest and oldest national scholarship program for high school girls. During its 56-year history, |
1-3 |
the program has provided life-changing experiences for more than 730,000 young women and last |
1-4 |
year, provided more than $108 million in cash and college scholarship opportunities to program |
1-5 |
participants at the local, state, and national levels; and |
1-6 |
     WHEREAS, Locally, Distinguished Young Women of RI is a nonprofit scholarship |
1-7 |
program that rewards and recognizes the excellence of young women who are high school seniors |
1-8 |
in Rhode Island; and |
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, Judged on outstanding academic achievement, leadership skills, talent, and |
1-10 |
community service, five high school seniors from Rhode Island competed to represent the state as |
1-11 |
the Distinguished Young Woman of RI for 2013; and |
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, On March 3rd, Nisa Villareal, the daughter of Lisa Villareal and a graduating |
1-13 |
senior at Johnston High School, earned the prestigious title of Distinguished Young Woman of RI |
1-14 |
and was awarded $1,400 in cash scholarships; and |
1-15 |
     WHEREAS, Nisa possesses incredible school spirit and has been extremely involved in |
1-16 |
myriad activities within her school community. She is an officer on the National Honor Society |
1-17 |
and the Student Council, a member of both the Big Brother/Big Sister and SADD groups, was the |
1-18 |
cheerleading team captain, a member of the Captains Council, and organized the school blood |
1-19 |
drive and food drives, to name just a few of her many activities; and |
2-20 |
     WHEREAS, Over the course of 2013, Nisa will represent Rhode Island at various public |
2-21 |
events. She will serve as a role model to young people in our state by spreading the program’s |
2-22 |
national outreach message of “Be Your Best Self,” which is “designed to encourage self-esteem |
2-23 |
and excellence in all young people through its five principles: Be Healthy, Be Involved, Be |
2-24 |
Studious, Be Ambitious, and Be Responsible”; and |
2-25 |
     WHEREAS, In June of this year, Nisa will compete with 49 other state representatives |
2-26 |
for over $150,000 in cash scholarships at the 56th National Finals Competition to be held in |
2-27 |
Mobile, Alabama; now, therefore be it |
2-28 |
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
2-29 |
Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Nisa Villareal on being named the 2013 |
2-30 |
Distinguished Young Woman of RI and wishes her the very best of luck in the upcoming national |
2-31 |
competition; and be it further |
2-32 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-33 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Nisa Villareal. |
