SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SHOOTING IN NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT | |

     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of twenty |

young children, Charlotte Bacon, Daniel Barden, Olivia Engel, Josephine Gay, Ana Marquez- |

Greene, Dylan Hockley, Madeleine Hsu, Catherine Hubbard, Chase Kowalski, Jesse Lewis, |

James Mattioli, Grace McDonnell, Emilie Parker, Jack Pinto, Noah Pozner, Caroline Previdi, |
1-5 |
Jessica Rekos, Avielle Richman, Benjamin Wheeler, and Allison Wyatt, and six teachers and |
1-6 |
staff members, Rachel DaVino, Dawn Hochsprung, Anne Marie Murphy, Lauren Russo, Mary |

Sherlach, and Victoria Soto, who were tragically killed at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in |

Newtown, Connecticut; and |
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, In the early morning hours of Friday, December 14th, 2012, shortly after the |
1-10 |
beginning-of-school bell sounded, shots rang out in the halls of the Sandy Hook Elementary |
1-11 |
School. As the news unfolded, the entire world watched in shock, empathizing with the plight of |
1-12 |
frightened parents and family members, and praying for a merciful conclusion to the nightmarish |
1-13 |
ordeal; and |
1-14 |
     WHEREAS, Ultimately, the unimaginable occurred when a lone gunman shot and killed |
1-15 |
twenty beautiful and cherished, innocent little six- and seven-year-olds and six of the dedicated |
1-16 |
teachers and staff working at the school. In a profoundly heartrending journey of spiritual and |
1-17 |
corporeal loss, these twenty-six souls lost their futures and their lives; and |
1-18 |
     WHEREAS, To the parents who faced the unnatural and unimaginable act of burying |
1-19 |
their children, to the husbands who are forever separated from their wives, to the children who |
1-20 |
lost their mothers, sisters or brothers, and to a community that lost its innocence and trust, know |

that the citizens of Rhode Island and indeed millions of people across the country mourn with |
2-2 |
you; and |
2-3 |
     WHEREAS, These twenty-six individuals enriched the lives of all who knew them and |
2-4 |
they will be dearly missed and always remembered; now, therefore be it |
2-5 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-6 |
hereby offers our deepest sympathy and prayers to the families and friends of those killed at the |
2-7 |
Sandy Hook Elementary School; and be it further |
2-8 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-9 |
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the families of Charlotte Bacon, Daniel Barden, |

Olivia Engel, Josephine Gay, Ana Marquez-Greene, Dylan Hockley, Madeleine Hsu, Catherine |
