RECOGNIZING FEBRUARY 1, 2013, AS "NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY" IN THE STATE

OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The American Heart Association’s “Go Red For Women®” movement has

1-2

been impacting the health of women for ten years. More than 627,000 women’s lives have been

1-3

saved and 330 fewer women are dying every day; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, yet only one in five American

1-5

women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat; and

1-6

     WHEREAS, Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year,

1-7

killing approximately one woman every minute; and

1-8

     WHEREAS, An estimated 43 million women in the United States are affected by

1-9

cardiovascular diseases, and 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing

1-10

heart disease; and

1-11

     WHEREAS, Women comprise only 24 percent of participants in all heart-related studies;

1-12

and

1-13

     WHEREAS, Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease,

1-14

and the gap between men’s and women’s survival continues to widen; and

1-15

     WHEREAS, Women are less likely to call 9-1-1 for themselves when experiencing

1-16

symptoms of a heart attack than they are if someone else is having a heart attack; and

1-17

     WHEREAS, In celebration of the 10th National Wear Red Day on February 1st of 2013,

1-18

“Go Red For Women®” is asking women all across America to join them in making America Go

1-19

Red and save women’s lives; now, therefore be it

2-20

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations,

2-21

in recognition of the importance of the ongoing fight against heart disease and stroke, hereby

2-22

proclaims February 1, 2013, as “National Wear Red Day” in the State of Rhode Island; and be it

2-23

further

2-24

     RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby urges all the citizens of our state to show their

2-25

support for women and the fight against heart disease by commemorating this day by wearing the

2-26

color red. By increasing awareness, speaking up about heart disease, and empowering women to

2-27

reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease, we can save thousands of lives each year; and be it

2-28

further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2-30

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the National Office of the American Heart

2-31

Association, The American Heart Association, Northeast Affiliate, and the Rhode Island Office

2-32

of the American Heart Association.
