EXTENDING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF FORMER RHODE ISLAND STATE | |
SENATOR, THE HONORABLE WALTER J. MRUK, SR. | |

     WHEREAS, It is with profound sadness and regret that this Senate has learned of the |

passing of The Honorable Walter J. Mruk, Sr., a longtime resident of the Town of Coventry, a |
1-3 |
charismatic gentleman, and a well-respected former member of the Rhode Island State Senate; |
1-4 |
and |
1-5 |
     WHEREAS, Born in Coventry, Mr. Mruk had been married to the late Claire R. Mruk for |
1-6 |
sixty-two years. He was the father of Walter Mruk, Jr., Sandra Murphy, and the late Kevin Mruk; |
1-7 |
and |
1-8 |
     WHEREAS, Mr. Mruk had attended school in Coventry. He later served our country in |
1-9 |
the Merchant Marines during World War II and had been employed for many years as a liquor |
1-10 |
store operator; and |
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, Elected to the Rhode Island Senate in November of 1974, The Honorable |
1-12 |
Walter Mruk served his constituency in the Town of Coventry from 1975 until 1984. Highly |
1-13 |
respected by his peers, he was Chairman of the Rhode Island Lottery Commission and served as |
1-14 |
Deputy Majority Leader; and |
1-15 |
     WHEREAS, Dedicated to serving the community, Mr. Mruk had been the Treasurer of |
1-16 |
the Coventry Town Committee, was a Coventry Councilman, and was a member of the town’s |
1-17 |
Building Committee, Planning Board, and Industrial Commission; and |
1-18 |
     WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Mruk was a member of myriad social and community |
1-19 |
organizations including being a charter member of the West-Greenwich-Coventry Elks, a member |
1-20 |
of the Gibson Council Knights of Columbus and the Polish American Citizens Club, and a |

parishioner of St. James Church; and |
2-2 |
     WHEREAS, Walter Mruk consistently demonstrated an abiding dedication to serving the |
2-3 |
best interests of the people of Coventry and our state. He represented all that is best in public |
2-4 |
service and he will be missed; now, therefore be it |
2-5 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-6 |
hereby offers its sincere condolences on the passing of The Honorable Walter J. Mruk, Sr.; and be |
2-7 |
it further |
2-8 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-9 |
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Mr. Walter Mruk, Jr., and Ms. Sandra Murphy. |
