PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 27, 2013, AS DOMINICAN REPUBLIC INDEPENDENCE | |
DAY IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

     WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Senate to commemorate historical events which |

exemplify the spirit and struggle of people throughout our state and the world to achieve |
1-3 |
independence and live in peace and freedom; and |
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long standing |
1-5 |
traditions, this Senate is justly proud to commemorate the 169th Anniversary of the Dominican |
1-6 |
Republic Independence, to be celebrated on February 27, 2013; and |
1-7 |
     WHEREAS, The people of the Dominican Republic acquired their independence from |
1-8 |
Spain on February 27, 1844; and |
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, Every year, this auspicious occasion is celebrated and provides an |
1-10 |
opportunity for all people to reflect upon the rich history of the Dominican Republic and the |
1-11 |
many contributions of Latin Americans to our country, as well as the world; and |
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, February 27th has been designated as Dominican Independence Day in the |
1-13 |
State of Rhode Island; and |
1-14 |
     WHEREAS, Dominicans have brought great contributions to our State and Nation. |

Dominicans have demonstrated their success as National League Baseball stars, as the inspiration |
1-16 |
of high fashion, such as the legendary Oscar de la Renta, and as thousands of soldiers, doctors, |
1-17 |
lawyers, journalists, educators, and public servants who work every day to improve their world; |
1-18 |
and |
1-19 |
     WHEREAS, Those who enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have |
1-20 |
shown a long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the recognition and |
2-1 |
applause of all the citizens of this great Ocean State; now, therefore, be it |
2-2 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-3 |
hereby recognizes the 169th Anniversary of the Dominican Republic Independence to be |
2-4 |
celebrated on February 27, 2013. We urge all Rhode Islanders to recognize the importance of |
2-5 |
acknowledging the contributions of Dominicans and Dominican Americans to Rhode Island and |
2-6 |
the United States; and be it further |
2-7 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-8 |
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to various Dominican organizations in the State of |
2-9 |
Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation. |
