It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |

     SECTION 1. Section 11-47-24 of the General Laws in Chapter 11-47 entitled "Weapons" |

is hereby amended to read as follows: |

     11-47-24. Alteration of marks of identification on firearms. -- (a) No person shall |
1-4 |
change, alter, remove, or obliterate the name of the maker, model, manufacturer's number, or |
1-5 |
other mark of identification on any firearm. |
1-6 |
     (b) No person shall receive, transport, or possess any firearm which has had any maker, |
1-7 |
model, manufacturer's number or other mark of identification removed, altered, or obliterated. |
1-8 |
     (c) Possession of any firearm upon which any of these marks shall have been changed, |
1-9 |
altered, removed, or obliterated shall be prima facie evidence that the possessor has changed, |
1-10 |
altered, removed, or obliterated it. |
1-11 |
     (d) Violation of the provisions of this section may be punished by imprisonment for not |
1-12 |
more than five (5) years. |
1-13 |
     (e) This section shall not apply to antique and collectible weapons legally possessed by |
1-14 |
collectors and dealers of firearms as provided in section 11-47-25. |
1-15 |
     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |

     This act would make it unlawful for any person to receive, transport or possess any |

firearm which has had any maker, model, manufacturer's number or other mark of identification |

removed, altered, or obliterated, except for antique and collectible weapons legally possessed by |

collectors and dealers of firearms. |

     This act would take effect upon passage. |
