RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING NICHOLAS A. GIVEN ON ACHIEVING | |
SCOUTING'S MOST DISTINGUISHED HONOR, THE RANK OF EAGLE SCOUT | |

     WHEREAS, In a society that grows increasingly fragmented and fractious and all too |

often tempts its youth to selfish and unwise decisions, it is a very special young man who chooses |
1-3 |
to dedicate himself to the service of others by putting into practice the noble ideals of the Scout |
1-4 |
Oath and Scout Law. Nicolas A. Given is just such a first-rate youth, and his accomplishments |
1-5 |
are truly deserving of our recognition; and |
1-6 |
     WHEREAS, Nicolas is a member of Troop 1 Kingston, Rhode Island. With perseverance |
1-7 |
and determination, he has attained the highest rank in scouting, the Eagle, by meeting all the |
1-8 |
extensive requirements; and |
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, During his years in scouting, Nicolas has demonstrated wide-ranging |
1-10 |
abilities that make him a worthy leader. In addition to earning an array of merit badges, Nicholas |
1-11 |
participated in a strenuous 52-mile hike across the Appalachian Trail and a high adventure camp |
1-12 |
at the Florida Sea Base in the Florida Keys; and |
1-13 |
     WHEREAS, As the highlight of his scouting years, he completed the final step toward |
1-14 |
obtaining the rank of Eagle by planning and carrying out an extensive Eagle service project. |
1-15 |
Nicholas reclaimed an overgrown parking area at St. Augustine’s Church in Kingston, Rhode |
1-16 |
Island. Nicholas and fellow scouts devoted countless hours and amazing amount of energy using |
1-17 |
hand tools to clear the overgrown brush for his project; and |
1-18 |
     WHEREAS, Attaining the rank of Eagle requires considerable perseverance and is |
1-19 |
considered to be the pinnacle of achievement with the Boy Scouts of America. It is an exceptional |
1-20 |
distinction achieved by fewer than five percent of all the young men who enter scouting; and |
2-1 |
      WHEREAS, Nicholas is the son of James and Paula Given, and is currently in his |
2-2 |
Sophomore year at South Kingstown High School, where he is a member of the wrestling team; |
2-3 |
and |
2-4 |
     WHEREAS, It is essential and fitting to recognize the triumphs of our youth, and to |
2-5 |
celebrate the accomplishments of our future leaders. Nicholas A. Given is a remarkable young |
2-6 |
man who exemplifies everything an Eagle Scout should be, and all that we hope our children will |
2-7 |
grow to be; now, therefore be it |
2-8 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-9 |
hereby honors Nicholas A. Given for his service to the community and for setting a high standard |
2-10 |
of commitment and dedication by which youth of this great state may follow. We congratulate |
2-11 |
him for all he has done to attain the rank of Eagle, and extend our very best wishes for good |
2-12 |
health and happiness in the months and years ahead; and be it further |
2-13 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-14 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Nicolas A. Given. |
