DISTINGUISHED FINALISTS IN THE 18TH ANNUAL PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF | |
COMMUNITY AWARDS PROGRAM | |

     WHEREAS, The Prudential Spirit of Community Award, presented by Prudential |

Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors |
1-3 |
young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to |
1-4 |
serving their communities; and |
1-5 |
     WHEREAS, Omar Zaki, a junior at South Kingstown High School, has achieved national |
1-6 |
recognition for exemplary volunteer service by being selected as one of the distinguished finalists |
1-7 |
for the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards; and |
1-8 |
     WHEREAS, The recipients of this award clearly demonstrate that young people across |
1-9 |
America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities and |
1-10 |
deserve all the praise and appreciation that we can give them; and |
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, Omar earned this award by generously giving his time and energy to raise |
1-12 |
an amazing $5,000 through an organization he founded in 2011, called “Global Health”; and |
1-13 |
     WHEREAS, Through his generous donation, Omar was able to provide 1,000 care |
1-14 |
packages to families suffering from poverty in countries such as Haiti and Egypt; and |
1-15 |
     WHEREAS, The names of nearly 5,000 local nominees are submitted by various schools |
1-16 |
and organizations across the country and are then reviewed by an independent panel. The panel |
1-17 |
then selects the State Honorees and Distinguished Finalists based on criteria including personal |
1-18 |
initiative, effort, impact, and personal growth; and |
1-19 |
     WHEREAS, The success of the State of Rhode Island, the strength of our communities, |
1-20 |
and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of |
2-1 |
young people like Mr. Zaki who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others; now, |
2-2 |
therefore be it |

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-4 |
hereby congratulates Omar Zaki on being selected as one of the 2013 Prudential Spirit of |
2-5 |
Community Award finalists. We furthermore recognize and applaud his outstanding record of |
2-6 |
volunteer service, peer leadership, and community spirit, and extends our best wishes for his |
2-7 |
continued success and happiness; and be it further |
2-8 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-9 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Omar Zaki. |
