RELATING TO EDUCATION - ACADEMIC CREDIT FOR MILITARY SERVICE

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Title 16 of the General Laws entitled "EDUCATION" is hereby amended

by adding thereto the following chapter:

     CHAPTER 100

ACADEMIC CREDIT FOR MILITARY SERVICE

     16-100-1. Academic credit for military service. – All higher education institutions in

1-6

the state shall honor the military training, experience, correspondence courses and occupations of

1-7

an individual who has served in the military or armed forces of the United States by accepting for

1-8

transfer the academic credits that meet the standards of the American Council on Education or

1-9

equivalent standards for awarding academic credit, if the award of the educational credit is based

1-10

upon the institution’s admission standards and its role, scope, and mission. Each governing entity

1-11

of a higher education institution shall adopt a policy or promulgate regulations requiring each

1-12

institution under the governing entity’s supervision and management to award educational credits

1-13

to a student enrolled in the institution, who is also a veteran, for courses that are part of the

1-14

student’s military training or service.

1-15

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

     This act would require that all higher education institutions in the state adopt a policy and

promulgate regulations to award educational credits to veterans enrolled in their institution for

2-3

courses that were part of the student’s military training.

2-4

     This act would take effect upon passage.
