It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |

     SECTION 1. Title 16 of the General Laws entitled "EDUCATION" is hereby amended |

by adding thereto the following chapter: |

     CHAPTER 101 |

ACADEMIC CREDIT FOR MILITARY SERVICE |
1-5 |
     16-101-1. Academic credit for military service. -- State public higher education |
1-6 |
institutions in the state shall honor the military training, experience, correspondence courses and |
1-7 |
occupations of an individual who has served in the military or armed forces of the United States |
1-8 |
by allowing academic credits that meet the standards of the American Council on Education or |
1-9 |
equivalent standards for awarding academic credit, if the award of the educational credit is based |
1-10 |
upon the institution’s admission standards and its role, scope, and mission. The board of |
1-11 |
education shall adopt policies or regulations requiring each institution to award educational |
1-12 |
credits to a student enrolled in the institution, based upon the student’s military training or service |
1-13 |
when academically appropriate. |
1-14 |
     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |

     This act would require that state run public higher education institutions adopt a policy |

and promulgate regulations to award educational credits to veterans enrolled in their institution |

for courses that were part of the student’s military training. |
