S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

RECOGNIZING MAY 15TH AS "PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY" AND

CELEBRATING THE WEEK OF MAY 12TH - 18TH, 2013 AS "NATIONAL POLICE

WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, In memory of those police officers who have selflessly died or been

disabled in the line of duty, the State of Rhode Island annually celebrates “National Police

1-3

Week”; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, National Police Week was first signed into law in 1962 by President John F.

1-5

Kennedy and enacted in the Rhode Island General Laws in 1966; and

1-6

     WHEREAS, Police officers in the State of Rhode Island and across America work

1-7

diligently on behalf of the people without regard to the peril or hazards they face each and every

1-8

day as they safeguard our lives, our rights and freedoms, and our property. It is important to

1-9

recognize and thank these noble and courageous individuals; now, therefore be it

1-10

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

1-11

hereby recognizes May 15th as “Peace Officers Memorial Day” and celebrates the week of May

1-12

12th – 18th , 2013, as “National Police Week” in our state; and be it further

1-13

     RESOLVED, That this Senate offers our sincere condolences to the families and friends

1-14

of the valiant and heroic police officers who have given their lives or have been disabled in the

1-15

performance of their duty in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further

1-16

     RESOLVED, That this Senate respectfully requests that the Governor direct all flags in

1-17

the state to be lowered to half-mast during this time of solemn remembrance and invites all Rhode

1-18

Island communities and citizenry to observe this celebration with appropriate ceremonies and

1-19

activities; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2-21

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Honorable Lincoln D. Chafee, Governor of

2-22

the State of Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Director of Administration, the Rhode Island State

2-23

Lodge Fraternal Order of Police, and the Rhode Island International Brotherhood of Police

2-24

Officers.
