THANKING MARY DONNELLY FOR HER 54 YEARS OF DEVOTED SERVICE IN THE | |
NURSING PROFESSION AND HER COMMITMENT TO A HEALTHY BLOCK ISLAND | |

     WHEREAS, To the extreme good fortune of the citizens of Block Island, Mary Donnelly |

has been the town’s resident nurse for the past fifty-four years. She is also the administrator of |
1-3 |
the Mary D. Fund, a charity she created to provide year-round inhabitants of the tiny island with |
1-4 |
much needed financial help during the harsh winter months; and |
1-5 |
     WHEREAS, Striving to make a positive difference in the healthcare of New Shoreham’s |
1-6 |
populace, Ms. Donnelly, an 85-year-old mother of seven, gave grants totaling $50,000 to |
1-7 |
roughly 30 percent of the island's 1,000 residents. She paid bills as big as a home mortgage and |
1-8 |
as small as a ferry ticket to the mainland; and |
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, The Mary D. Fund is not subsidized by the government or local taxes but |
1-10 |
instead, relies totally on individual donations and grants. By not accepting federal or state |
1-11 |
monies, Ms. Donnelly has been able to ensure that the money goes to those who are truly in need; |
1-12 |
and |
1-13 |
     WHEREAS, Mary Donnelly embodies the incredible love, compassion, and spirit of |
1-14 |
cheerful dedication to her patients that are the true hallmarks of the nursing profession. She |
1-15 |
epitomizes the best in civic duty and her kindness and expertise with those in need is exemplary; |
1-16 |
and |
1-17 |
     WHEREAS, Eminently worthy of our gratitude and a long and happy retirement, Mary |
1-18 |
Donnelly “is an inspiring figure who can teach us a lot about how to help our friends and |

neighbors.” Her commitment to nursing is renowned and her devotion to the community of |
2-2 |
Block Island has been unwavering and heartfelt; now, therefore be it |
2-3 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-4 |
hereby thanks Mary Donnelly for more than five decades of conscientious and passionate service |
2-5 |
in the nursing profession and her commitment to a healthy Block Island community. We |
2-6 |
furthermore wish Mary continued health, joy, and fulfillment in all her future endeavors; and be it |
2-7 |
further |

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-9 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mary Donnelly. |
