1

WHEREAS, Farming is not only a basic necessity for all human life, but it is also a proud

2

tradition and an essential component in our state’s economy; and

3

WHEREAS, Thomas Jefferson once said, "Agriculture is our wisest pursuit, because it

4

will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good morals, and happiness." And while members

5

of the Wright family are perhaps not overburdened with copious amounts of money, they are rich

6

in family heritage and have achieved abundant success in the business of farming; and

7

WHEREAS, In 1914, George Wright moved his family to a 90-acre parcel of land in

8

North Smithfield that he had purchased in 1896. Over the course of the next century, four

9

generations of the Wright Family have been caring for the land and building a thriving business

10

known today as Wright’s Dairy Farm & Bakery; and

11

WHEREAS, Adopting a business philosophy of sound decision making mixed with a

12

dollop of calculated risk taking and a large measure of customer input has produced a business

13

that has morphed, expanded, and ultimately grown more successful over the years; and

14

WHEREAS, Today, Wright's Farm employs 70 local bakers, dairy plant workers, and

15

grounds hands.  The business produces several varieties of milk and ice cream, as well as a

16

cornucopia of delicious baked goods.  The farm has become such a traditional stop for

17

generations of families that the history of the farm has now been documented in a book entitled,

18

"Wright's Dairy Farm: History in Four Voices"; and

19

WHEREAS, The economic vitality of our state depends and relies on the strength of

20

small businesses such as the Wright's Dairy Farm who sagaciously and fruitfully carry on the

1

noble tradition of farming in our state; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED That the House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
