H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING MR. SHERWOOD "WOODY" SPRING ('63) ON BEING SELECTED

TO BE THE FIRST RECIPIENT OF THE PONAGANSET REGIONAL SCHOOL SYSTEM'S

"DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD"

     WHEREAS, The Ponaganset Regional School System, which is comprised of 6th through

12th grade students who live in Foster and Glocester, Rhode Island, has established a

"Distinguished Alumni Award"; and

     WHEREAS, To be a recipient of this prestigious award, a person must have made major

contributions to their communities, their career fields and/or society. Also, a recipient must have

graduated from Ponaganset High School, their graduation must have been 10 years prior to

nomination and consideration, and they must demonstrate the highest ethical conduct and moral

character. A committee of alumni, former faculty, and administrators solicit and review all

applicants before making a final determination as to who the recipient of this distinguished award

will be; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Sherwood "Woody" Spring, a retired United States Army Colonel and

retired astronaut, is the first recipient of this award. Mr. Spring's career includes graduation from

the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point, a Master's degree from the

University of Arizona, graduation from the United States Naval Test Pilot School, and graduation

from the Defense Systems Management College. Mr. Spring also served as Mission Specialist on

the NASA Shuttle Atlantis in 1985; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Mr. Sherwood "Woody" Spring ('63) on being

selected as the first recipient of the Ponaganset Regional School System's "Distinguished Alumni

Award"; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Sherwood "Woody" Spring.
