J O I N T   R E S O L U T I O N

RELATING TO NEWPORT PELL BRIDGE SAFETY

     Introduced By: Representatives Costa, and Valencia

     Date Introduced: January 30, 2014

     Referred To: House Finance

     WHEREAS, The health, safety, and welfare of our citizens and visitors require that the

Newport Pell Bridge be safely equipped, operated, and maintained; and

     WHEREAS, Safe passage over said bridge requires that Rhode Island law enforcement

officials strictly enforce laws prohibiting speeding and distracted driving thereon; and

     WHEREAS, Safe passage further requires that a center median barrier be installed on

said bridge to prevent the rising number crossover collisions, as established by studies undertaken

by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority; now therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That Rhode Island law enforcement officials be requested to enforce

strictly the laws prohibiting speeding and distracted driving on the Newport Pell Bridge, and that

the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority give priority to and forthwith install a center

median barrier on said bridge; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to send

certified copies of the foregoing resolution to the Superintendent of the State Police, the Police

Chiefs of Newport and Jamestown, and the Chairman of the Board of the Rhode Island Turnpike

and Bridge Authority.
