____________

H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING THE BURRILLVILLE GIRLS SOCCER TEAM ON WINNING THE

2013 RHODE ISLAND DIVISION II GIRLS SOCCER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Introduced By: Representatives Keable, and Newberry

     Date Introduced: February 11, 2014

Referred To: House read and passed

1

WHEREAS, Finishing the regular season with a 10-3-1 record, the Burrillville Girls

2

Soccer Team entered the Rhode Island Division II State Tournament as the third-seeded team.

3

After defeating West Warwick 2-1 in a thrilling Semi-Final match highlighted by Hailee Jarry's

4

two goals, Burrillville advanced to the championship game; and

5

WHEREAS, Burrillville entered the championship game as an underdog, but emerged

6

victorious when they stunned top-seeded and undefeated Lincoln by scoring four unanswered

7

goals, including two magnificent goals by Junior Kathryn Antoniello, to win the 2013 Girls

8

Soccer Division II State Championship at Rhode Island College, and to claim their first state title

9

since 1993; and

10

WHEREAS, Burrillville was led all season by the superb leadership of Senior Co-

11

Captains Tori Libby and Taylor Ross. Their hard work and vocal support from their teammates

12

was vital to the overall success of the Burrillville team this season; and

13

WHEREAS, Burrillville's stingy defense was a key component to the success of the

14

Broncos all season and, in particular, in the State Tournament. Burrillville has a superb defensive

15

backfield with Sydney Blais, Mikaela Messier, Caitlin Libby and Isis VanPutten together forming

16

an almost impenetrable defensive wall; and

17

WHEREAS, The goalkeeper is arguably the most important position on a soccer team

18

and Burrillville has a gem in Catherine Keable. Her calm demeanor and consistent play was a

19

crucial component to Burrillville’s success this season and when they needed her to come up with

1

a big save in the championship game, she proved she was a clutch performer when she stopped a

2

Lincoln player on a breakaway, making a magnificent save to keep a low screaming shot out of

3

the net; and

4

WHEREAS, Burrillville was also blessed all season and in the playoffs with the timely

5

scoring provided by Hailee Jarry and Kathryn Antoniello, as well as the strong play contributed

6

by a solid supporting cast, including Victoria Libby, Sarah Rogers, and Chelsea Almeida.

7

Burrillville also benefited by the superb coaching provided by Amy Cardone, Meghan Scotland

8

and Goalie Coach Eileen Liberty; now, therefore be it

9

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

10

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates the Burrillville Girls Soccer Team on winning the

11

2013 Rhode Island Division II Girls Soccer State Championship; and be it further
