It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Section 16-22-15 of the General Laws in Chapter 16-22 entitled |
2 | "Curriculum [See Title 16 Chapter 97 - The Rhode Island Board of Education Act]" is hereby |
3 | amended to read as follows: |
4 | 16-22-15. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation training. -- (a) The department of |
5 | elementary and secondary education shall develop and prescribe a cardiopulmonary resuscitation |
6 | (CPR) training course for public school students in the state. The course shall be established in |
7 | accordance with the requirements and criteria obtained from the Red Cross and/or the American |
8 | Heart Association and the director of the department of health. |
9 | (b) The department of elementary and secondary education shall promulgate course |
10 | guidelines including the age or grade level of pupils required to receive cardiopulmonary |
11 | resuscitation (CPR) training. This shall at a minimum include psychomotor skill-based |
12 | cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training and an overview of automated external defibrillator |
13 | (AED) use for all high school students prior to graduation. "Psychomotor skill" is defined as the |
14 | use of hands-on practicing to support cognitive learning. Cognitive-only training does not qualify. |
15 | Formal certification is not required. |
16 | (c) The school committees of the several cities, towns, and school districts shall provide |
17 | for the incorporation of the course in training in existing health education courses. The |
18 | department of elementary and secondary education shall establish a procedure for monitoring |
19 | adherence to this section. |

1 | (d) Appropriation. The sum of seventy-five thousand dollars ($75,000) is hereby |
2 | appropriated for fiscal year 2015 from the general fund to the director of health for the purchase |
3 | of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) manikins. Manikins shall be distributed to all high |
4 | schools in the state to aid with the implementation of the CPR training requirement established |
5 | pursuant to this section. |
6 | SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |
