RELATING TO PUBLIC OFFICERS AND EMPLOYEES -- SALARIES AND TRAVELING

EXPENSES

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 36-6-21 of the General Laws in Chapter 36-6 entitled "Salaries and

Traveling Expenses" is hereby amended to read as follows:

     36-6-21. Mass transportation and fringe benefit program deductions. -- The state

4

controller is hereby authorized and directed to make appropriate salary deductions, effective

5

January 1, 2008, and to adopt appropriate provisions to allow state officers and employees the

6

option to exclude employee commuting costs incurred from the purchase of RIPTA commuting

7

passes and reasonable parking costs associated with the use of the community pass from taxable

8

wages and compensation, consistent with section 132 of title 26, United States Code, not to

9

exceed the maximum level allowed by law (26 U.S.C. section 132(f)(2). RIPTA is hereby

10

authorized and directed to cooperate with the state controller in developing provisions to

11

implement this section.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.
