RELATING TO CRIMINAL OFFENSES - WEAPONS

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 11-47 of the General Laws entitled "Weapons" is hereby amended

by adding thereto the following section:

     11-47-63. Possession of firearms in airports. – (a) No person shall possess or transport

or attempt to transport any firearm through any security checkpoint or in any restricted area on

airport property.

     (1) For the purpose of this section, "airport property" means the property of any public

airport facility as defined in § 1-2-3.1.

     (2) Every person violating the provisions of this section shall, upon conviction be

sentenced to imprisonment for not less than one year nor more than five (5) years, or shall be

fined not less than five hundred dollars ($500) nor more than five thousand dollars ($5,000).

     (b) The provisions of this section shall not apply to any person who shall be exempt

pursuant to the provisions of § 11-47-9 while in the performance of duty or individuals with

documented authorization to carry weapons onto an airline consistent with applicable federal

aviation regulations.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.
